OKX, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, issued a warning notice today on their X platform. The notice issued is regarding the appearance of counterfeit OKX Wallet plugins on the Firefox browser plugin store.

According to the post, the exchange platform has not released any Firefox plugins and urges users to act quickly if at the users have by any chance interacted with the fake plugins.

Immediate Steps for Affected Users

OKX has asked users who have interacted with the fake plugins to transfer their wallet assets immediately to ensure security. Along with this, the platform also let the users know that they have filed an official complaint with Firefox officials to address the issue and requested them to remove the malicious plugin as soon as possible to avoid any damage to the users.

The exchange platform also requested the users to only download plugins and other applications from the official website of the exchange platform (okx.com) or through verified channels only. The exchange has also urged users to come forward and contact the official support team immediately to avoid any losses in assets.

OKX’s Response to Past Incident

This is not the first time that the exchange platform is dealing with fraudulent activity that is targeting its users. Most the past incidents were security breaches.

  • A $2.7 million security breach occurred due an internal procedure error for which the exchange platform carried out internal review, enhanced security measures which included adding multi-signature wallets and provided reimbursement to the affected users.
  • A $400,000 hack due to compromised management rights. The exchange platform reimbursed affected users and implemented additional security measures.
  • A Celestial token trading incident caused user losses. The exchange platform then conducted an airdrop of 3,014,381 Tether to the affected users.

With rise in fraudulent plugins and apps highlights the critical need for user vigilance in the cryptocurrency space. OKX has given the following tips to safeguard assets:

  • Use plugins from the official website or from verified sources
  • User to use security features which include two factor authentication (2FA) and other security measures.
  • Avoid downloading unsolicited plugins from unverified sources and avoid interacting with suspicious links claiming to represent OKX.
